Accessorizing… How to Layer

October 02

Accessorizing is one of the trickier aspects of getting dressed. We have been given many different opinions. Coco Chanel said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” Then there’s the more recent(ish) but nevertheless stylish Leandra Medine (a.k.a. Man Repeller), who coined and certainly popularized the quirky but fun “arm party.” More is more! According to her POV anyhow.

So what should you do? Well, truly, whatever you want! BUT! Keep in mind, balance. Figure out who you are. At least what look you’re going for that day. Are you feeling like pushing the edge, finding a little funk for your look? Cool. Then do the simple outfit + the over-the-top accessories and wild shoes. Find those highs and lows. Feeling like more of a Coco Chanel girl, thinking “it’s always better to be underdressed” like the legend herself? Then fall back on the old principles. Never big earrings with a big necklace, layer on the collarbone, never competing with the neckline of your top, and pick 2 regions at a time with space between. Example: arm party on the wrists & big ole’ earrings — letting your neck glow all by its gorgeous self. A fabulous printed hair scarf and oodles of necklaces — skipping the earrings this time. Make sense? Now have fun!
